The Kvisle Fund for GBM has been established as a long term initiative to raise money in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Money raised through this fund will be allocated to projects aimed at improving care and outcomes for patients and families facing a Glioblastoma Multiforme brain cancer diagnosis in Alberta.
Glioblastoma is the most common type of brain cancer and typically carries a prognosis of only 12-15 months, with standard of care treatment of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. At this time GBM has no known cause and no cure, and very few advancements to improve survival have occured in the last 20 years.
The Kvisle / Aldous family had been untouched by cancer until January 2014 when their mom, Dianne was diagnosed with GBM after having a seizure. Dianne was 60 years old, in great health, and living life to the fullest. She was originally given 4 months to live, but through aggressive surgery, as well as radiation, chemotherapy and some experimental treatments she survived over 2 years past her diagnosis and passed away in May 2016.
In May 2018, the Kvisle / Aldous family was yet again blindsided when Dianne’s daughter, Daina was also diagnosed with GBM at the age of 35. At the time of her diagnosis Daina was in the best shape of her life, loving her career as a corporate lawyer and proudly raising her two young boys with her husband Paul. With Daina’s diagnosis the family was also confronted with new information that up to 5% of GBM cases have a hereditary link, something that was not known when Dianne was diagnosed. Daina has completed the standard of care treatment in Canada and is now exploring experimental treatments abroad to help her fight this disease.
The Kvisle fund for GBM exists to create awareness, support families facing this disease, and ultimately raise funds to assist in advancing treatment options and research to help find a cure for Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Cancer.
